Working with business

Part time students from industry attending a one week module

Part time and distance learning courses

For industry and individuals we offer the opportunity to access our Materials Masters Courses on a part time basis, making them available to busy workers who need an extended period over which to study and flexible study methods.

Part time and distance learning options are available on our two Materials MSc, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate courses:

  • Advanced Materials Science and Engineering
  • Polymer Science and Engineering

Part time students can attend any one week block taught modules listed within the available modules for their chosen course, but also have the added dimension of a range of distance learning modules to study at home in their own time. The majority of part time students will usually attend at least one or two of the one week modules and find this very beneficial to gain more of a connection with our staff and the department and consequently we recommend it.

Part time students can study at their own pace varying the amount they study in any given year to suit their circumstances. Typically the MSc takes 3-4 years, the Postgraduate Diploma 2-3 years and the Certificate takes 1-2 years.

One week block modules are intensive and typically comprise 30-35hours of lectures, practicals and tutorials, taught here at Loughborough. Students then carry out coursework and revision for their exams in their own time.

Distance learning modules comprise a study booklet and recommended reading lists along with access to the module and resources in the University's on-line learning environment. Study booklets contain self assessment questions and this is supplemented by the online content especially the videos of the lectures held with students doing the full time version of the course.

Distance learning modules are assessed by coursework and exams and students in remote locations are able to arrange their exams either at an approved local higher education establishment or a British Council office.
