Ivan explains how his master's in Materials Engineering has provided him with skills and discipline that he can take into his future career, as well as providing him with a valuable foundation of knowledge in the subject area.

"The Materials Engineering master's programmes at Loughborough University provided modules that are beneficial to my existing work. In addtion, I am an avid cyclist and I wanted to experience the sporting scene which Loughborough is famous for. I was working in the research field prior to joining Loughborough and will continue to be in this field after graduation. This programme gave me a solid foundation in many aspects of materials science that allow me to explore further in the future.

The lecture review and LEARN system was very useful during revision and meant that we could easily refer back to what we had missed. Staff from the department were also helpful in answering questions we may have.

My project was on severe plastic deformation technique to achieve hetergenous microstructure. In this project, I coordinated the experiment schedule and planned the experimental condition with advise from my project supervisor.

My advice to anyone studying this programme would be: start your coursework earlier. Do a little each day rather than everything at once the night before.

Loughborough has exposed me to different perspectives and cultures compared to my home in Asia. This wider perspective will definitely be helpful in future work. It also taught me how to be consistent and disciplined in revision which I was lacking in the past."
