Personal profile

Tracy Bhamra is Professor of Sustainable Design. She has a BSc in Manufacturing and an MSc in Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management. She completed her PhD in Design for Disassembly and Recycling at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1995.

Professor Bhamra has extensive research experience in the field of sustainable design initially during her PhD and then following that at Manchester Business School and Cranfield University. During this time she has been very active in developing the research area of Sustainable Design.

In 2001 Professor Bhamra received funding to establish the Sustainable Design Network, this is now self-funded and has over 250 members. Her research work has been funded by ESPRC, DEFRA, DTI and a number of industrial organisations including, Boots, Huntleigh Technology, BT, Nortel, Electrolux, ICL and Tencel. She has also acted as an internal and external examiner for MSc, PhD and EngD theses in the UK and Internationally.

In recognition of her experience in the field of Sustainable Design she has been an invited speaker at various events and conferences including those organised by the Design Council, the Northern Ireland Growth Challenge, British Standards Institute, Institution of Electrical Engineers, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Local Action for Textiles and Clothing (LATC), Ecotextiles 2004, Welsh Development Agency, Universiti di Federico II Napoli and the Polytechnico di Milano.

Tracy has been involved in teaching since 1992. Whilst at Cranfield University she set up and ran the MSc in Manufacturing: Sustainability and Design which was the first UK postgraduate course focussing specifically on sustainable design. At Loughborough University she is the Module Leader for the 2nd year undergraduate module in Sustainable Design. Professor Bhamra has also organised a number of short courses for companies in the area of sustainable design. These include Ford, GKN, MOD, Racal, and around fifty SMEs.

Tracy has over 100 publications associated with her work and has been awarded funding totalling over £1.1 million from various bodies such as DEFRA, EPSRC, DTI, Design Council and a number of industrial organisations.
