Russian

Russian Level 1

This course is designed for complete beginners, with no prior knowledge of Russian. It covers the basic language you need for everyday situations and aims to give you confidence whether you want to learn for business, for travel or just for fun.

The course develops speaking and comprehension skills with the use of basic grammar. Interactive class activities with regular pair-work and native speaking audio recordings will encourage students to make good progress from the very start and make the most of learning Russian.

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Introducing yourself, members of family and friends.
  • Ordering a meal or drink in a restaurant.
  • Navigating in town, asking where something is and how far it is.
  • Going shopping (asking for items, understanding  prices).
  • Booking a hotel room.

The course is based on Talk Russian BBC Active, (textbook plus 2 CDs) by Svetlana Furlong and Georgina Martin, third edition, 2015, ISBN 978-1-406-68015-7

On completion students will be able to:

  • read  Russian (Cyrillic) script.
  • demonstrate speaking and understanding skills in simple social situations, with the use of basic grammar.
  • have general knowledge of Russian culture and traditions.

Russian Level 2

This course is designed for those who have completed a beginners' course or have some basic experience of the Russian language. Knowledge of the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet is required to register for this level. 

The aim of the course is to build upon the language skills gained at level 1, with a wider use of vocabulary and grammar. The course is communicative with an emphasis on developing understanding and speaking skills. It also provides further insights into both modern Russia and traditional customs.

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Talking about yourself and your family.
  • Describing places and directions.
  • Travelling.
  • Food and drink.
  • Talking about likes and dislikes.
  • Talking about events in the past.

The course is based on the following books: Ruslan Russian 1 Book with audio CD - 5th edition (Oct. 2012) ISBN 9781899785834 and Ruslan Russian 1 Student Workbook (with free online audio)  2nd edition 2017

On completion students will be able to:

  • Read and understand short, simple texts.
  • Catch the main points in short, clear messages and announcements.
  • Participate in simple social situations.
  • Have a better understanding of Russian customs and traditions.

This course is not available in 2021-22 - sorry!

Russian Level 3

This course is designed for those who have completed level 2 at Loughborough University or have a basic GCSE level of competence and can communicate on simple topics. Knowledge of the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet is required to register for this level. 

The emphasis of the course is on learning for communication, further developing listening and speaking as well as reading and writing skills, with a concise, systematic approach to grammar.
 

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Talking about family and friends.
  • Discussing the weather and climate in Russia and England.
  • Making arrangements to meet and go out.
  • Arranging a visit and seeing a doctor.
  • Going shopping.
  • Talking about work and leisure.

The course is based on the following books: 

Ruslan Russian 2 Book by John Langran and Natalya Veshnyeva (2013) and Ruslan Russian 2 Student Workbook (2018). Both have free online audio.

Ruslan Russian 2 Supplementary reader (2013).

On completion students will be able to:

  • Follow much of what is read and said at near normal speed on familiar matters.
  • Participate in a wider range of social situations.
