Fast Track 2

This 10-week post-beginner course is modelled on credit-bearing module LAN202 (German 2). Successful completion of Fast track 2 gives right of entry to credit-bearing module LAN203 (German 3). This course requires regular work and regular attendance. It includes a third hour of independent online guided work per week.

Aims:

  • To provide non-specialist students who have completed Fast Track Level 1 or LAN201 with practical communicative competence in German through systematic exposure to everyday topics.
  • To develop cultural competence.
  • To encourage simple thought patterns in the target language.
  • To reach Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages when taken in combination with Fast Track 1, LAN201 or another course at A1.1 level.

In addition to 2 x 45 minutes (with a 10-minute break in between) per week for 10 weeks and guided independent study materials online, the fee includes:

  • A short introduction to using the learning platforms for new learners
  • Access to the end of semester listening, reading & writing assessments + preparation materials and answer sheets for self-evaluation
  • For an additional fee, learners can be evaluated by the teacher (oral task + marked work and feedback). Details to be provided during the semester

N.B. this is a post-beginner course for learners who have studied German for one semester, once a week (20-24 hours of tuition). We do not recommend that more advanced learners sign up.

Fast Track 4

This 10-week lower intermediate course is modelled on credit-bearing module LAN204 (German 4). Successful completion of Fast track 4 gives right of entry to credit-bearing module LAN205 (German 5). This course requires regular work and regular attendance. It includes a third hour of online work per week.

Open to learners who have completed module LAN203, German Fast Track 3 or have taken 3 semesters of German or equivalent (around 70 hours of contact time + independent study). This is a GCSE A or B plus one semester of teaching at University level.

Aims:

  • To proceed towards achieving level A2 standard of the Common European Framework (when taken in combination with Fast Track 3), further developing the capacity to understand sentences and frequently used expressions.
  • To develop practical communicative competence in German in areas of value to non-specialists; to develop cultural competence.
  • Be able to communicate in tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters (for example matters relating to health, the media, the local environment).

N.B. This is a lower intermediate class, post GCSE. It is not recommended for advanced learners.
