Swim, Bike, Run: Investigating the Motivations, Practices and Experiences of Triathletes in the UK.
Triathlon is a rapidly growing sport with a unique participant base which has eluded significant study within geography and the social sciences. The increasingly pervasive use of activity tracking applications such as Strava, and the online social community attached to these platforms has impacted triathletes’ everyday practices and experiences, and individuals interactions with the environment. By exploring aspects of triathletes training, events and socialisation, this research aims to investigate the motivations, practices and experiences of triathletes in the UK, with specific reference to the role of the triathlon ‘social world’ (Unruh 1980) and the ubiquitous use of activity tracking applications.
