Loughborough Design School hosts UX focussed International Design Jam.

Design School students from the Postgraduate User Experience Design MA programme joined undergraduate design students to take part in a one-day Design Jam as part of an on -going collaboration with Business Lab MBA students from Hong Kong University, Asia’s number one MBA programme. They were supported on the day by mentors from Deloitte Digital and Pixeled Eggs design agencies.

Starting a week before the event, 54 Design School students were grouped into 11 User Experience (UX) agencies and virtually met their clients - MBA students from the Business Lab programme at Hong Kong University. Throughout the week, the UX agencies and clients discussed how to further refine their briefings; bringing ideas, problems and solutions to the table in preparation for the weekend’s event.

On Saturday 18th November the cross-discipline Uxathon took place at the Design School. The student teams met their clients again via Skype, and then worked intensively on developing the brief and unpacking where digital design could enhance the user experience of an MBA start-up business concept. During the day the Design School students developed branding, graphic design, app and service concepts, and provided guidance on product strategy from a user centred design perspective. The aim of the event was to offer the students a chance to experience a real life brief, meet clients and deadlines, work with international students and understand how to apply their studies to a real design concept.

At the end of the day there were awards presented for Best Prototype, Concept, Client Relationship and Branding which were presented by a panel of judges from Pixeled Eggs and Deloitte Digital.

The whole event was undoubtedly a great success for all involved. This is the third Uxathon organised and hosted at the Design School with design agency mentors, and we look forward to another equally successful event next year. A big thank you to everyone for making the event such an enjoyable and positive experience.

The UXathon was co-organized by André Brito, Val MitchellGarrath Wilson and Carolina Escobar-Tello from Loughborough Design School, Pedro Eloy, HKU MBA, Sachin Tipnis, Josephine Chan and Hoki Chan from Hong Kong University.  Mentors were provided by Carol Yung, Emma Goddard, Sam Dempsey and Becky Ferraro from Deloitte Digital, Sepas Seraj and Kris Adams from Pixeled Eggs. The event is an initiative of the Youth and Women Entrepreneurs Taskforce from the United Nations ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN).
