Abstract:

While there has been much progress toward the goal of creating robotic arms and hands that are able to manipulate their surroundings, robotic hands are still far behind human hands in terms of dexterity. This talk argues that studying how humans use their hands can yield insights in designing and controlling artificial manipulators. First, I summarize studies of human grasping I have conducted and the insights that can be taken from them. Then I detail applications of these studies to the domains of creating robotic hands and creating animated human characters.
