Loughborough's Subject in a Box initiative shortlisted for Times Higher Education award

Loughborough University has been shortlisted in the Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year category of the Times Higher Education Awards 2018 for its Subject in a Box project.

The annual honours, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the higher education sector, celebrate outstanding examples of best practice across a range of activity.

Subject in a Box is a ground-breaking project designed to engage with hard to reach students aged 14-15 years, whilst supporting the GCSE curriculum. Schools are sent a box, free of charge, which comes complete with a lesson plan, presentation, worksheets and the equipment required to deliver the lesson.

Each box has had input from one of our University academics and enables teachers of year 10 students to provide their class with a unique insight into degree-level study whilst providing an engaging, interactive lesson, suitable for their current level of learning.

Speaking about the shortlisting, Subject in a Box project lead David Hollis said: “We are delighted that our initiative has been shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Award, which represent the very best of the sector.

“We developed Subject in a Box to showcase to children across the country the subjects that are available to study at University through fun and interactive activities, and explore what career routes are available via these subjects.

“In addition, Subject in a Box has a particular focus on reaching children in areas of low progression to higher education – to promote that university is a viable option for them.”

The Times Higher Education awards ceremony will be held on 29th November 2018 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, with more than 1,000 guests expected to attend, including politicians, senior figures within the higher education sector and university staff from around the UK.

Among the subject areas covered by the Subject in a Box project are Chemistry and Physics.
