Celebrating Our Class of 2020!
Unfortunately we are unable to celebrate graduation until Easter 2021 due to COVID-19, but we have decided to celebrate anyway by showing the world how amazing our Graduates are!
The Chemical Engineering Department are extremely proud of the way our Class of 2020 completed their final year - they excelled in their final months as students in spite of the issues thrown at them by the current pandemic and they have grown over the course of their studies, not only to become ready for furthering their academic and industrial futures, but also as individual adults, to become the incredible people that they are.
Below are the finalist prize winners for this year, with quotes from each of them. Some of the quotes are in respect to their prizes, some are in respect of their experience at Loughborough University and some of them offer inspiration for future students.
We hope that you will celebrate with them and us!
Kieran Ragoo (top image) - Department Project Prize (Best Research Project)
"Completing my final year research project with my partner and tutor (Ben Raymond and Dr Das, respectively), helped to broaden my chemical engineering understanding and allowed me to see the real world application of my past 3 years of study."
Kieran is starting a Masters in Finance and Management this coming year at Loughborough University.
Ben Raymond - Department Project Prize (Best Research Project)
“My final year research project was a very new and challenging task, but my tutor (Dr Das) and research partner (Kieran Ragoo) made all the hard work seem fun and refreshing”
Joel Barrett - Chemical Engineering Department BEng Design Prize
“I’d like to thank the department for this award, it is certainly a very nice surprise. I am grateful to have my hard work recognized and rewarded. I was fortunate to have an outstanding team who worked extremely hard, especially given the difficult circumstances.”
Joel is starting the role of ‘Business Operations Management Graduate’ at Toyota Manufacturing UK.
“Many congratulations to all the Chemical Engineering 2020 prize recipients. I am delighted to see so many of our wonderful students have won the prizes that recognise different aspects of achievements. It is a pity that we cannot have a party to celebrate together at the moment, but I wanted to let you know that all the academic staff including myself are very proud of you—not only the prize winners, but everyone who has overcome the difficulties and achieved your success in the past months”
Professor Jin Xuan - Head of Department 2020

In September Dan will start his role as a Graduate Chemical Process Engineer for ExxonMobil, working at ESSO’s Fawley Refinery.
Sophie Tarver - ExxonMobil: The Esso Synergy™ Fuels Prize (top student in examined modules)
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Loughborough. Being able to achieve both academic and sporting success in athletics really proves that with hard work, good time management, support from my friends, athletics coach and lecturers, anything is possible!”
Sam Maskery - BP Chemicals Design Prize (Best MEng Indiv Design)
'This award was so unexpected but I’m so proud to accept it, it’s really rounded off what has been a great four years at Loughborough and thank you to my team, Applied Cryogenics, for making the design project so enjoyable.'

Although we are obviously looking forward to the Graduation Ceremony in April 2021, (and hearing what you have been doing since leaving Loughborough University!), we would still like to say, here and now, "CONGRATULATIONS to you all!" from everyone in the Chemical Engineering Department and the School of AACME, regardless of whether you won a prize or not - you are all absolutely amazing and we look forward very much to celebrating your achievement with you in person next year!
