Another Student in New York!

As the large majority of our staff and students take a well deserved break, we decided to share another student's experience on their Personal Development Project.

James Hockey x 300

James Hockey, MEng Chemical Engineering student at Loughborough University, is also at Cornell University in New York, along with Will Fish, as featured previously on our news pages.

We caught up with James as he looks forward to returning to University next week:

"I am currently undertaking my Professional Development Project at Cornell University in New York. My project is to determine the economic feasibility of centralised biorefinery’s across New York State using Anaerobic Digestion and Power-to-Gas (P2G).

P2G involves using excess renewable energy from wind and solar farms and carbon dioxide produced as a result of anaerobic digestion to produce methane. This involves the electrolysis of water, and a methanation reaction.

This project has given me the opportunity to work with a variety of professors and students from across Cornell, and also collaborate with a company in Germany on the feasibility of this project. I have also attended lectures in sustainable energy while at Cornell to further my understanding of the subject and its applications worldwide.

Cornell

Skiing and Rock Climbing are some of the activities that I have taken part in since attending Cornell. This has given me the chance to meet new people and learn new skills. Throughout, the rest of my time in the United States, I will take the opportunity to travel to other areas for Conferences and breaks including California, Washington DC, and Miami.

Research and work in the renewable energy field has always been an interest of mine, and this experience means that I can work with some of the best. I hope I can use this knowledge and the skills from my industrial placement to pursue a job in the sustainable energy industry when I graduate."

Thank you for letting us know how you are getting on James. We are looking forward to welcoming you back very soon!
