Professor Terence Kavanagh
Professor of Design and Applied Arts
Terry is currently working with colleagues in the School of the Arts, Ben Dolman and Alan Duncan http://www.cdtp-photography.blogspot.co.uk/ and Dr. Paul Kelly from the Department of Chemistry on a project using traditional photographic methods and chemistry, considering their applications alongside contemporary image making processes.
Following the successful preliminary research findings of an EPSRC funded project: ‘Bridging the Gaps’, entitled ‘Establishing safe and commercially viable chemistry to support the combining of traditional photographic processes and digital print technologies’ in 2013 the project will be further developed with the undertaking a major, year long, research project in 2014-2015.
Some of the processes being considered include: the use of a variety of noble metals; Carbon printing; Bromoil and Rawlins Oil; Wet plate Collodion; Digital negative production; Specialist approaches to colouration; and The safe use of non-conventional photographic chemical processes.
