I am a professional civil engineer with experience in both research and practise with a focus on geotechnical engineering, geosynthetics, transportation geotechnics, and environmental geotechnics.

I am a professional civil engineer with experience in both research and practice with a focus on geotechnical engineering, geosynthetics, transportation geotechnics, and environmental geotechnics. As part of my academic experience, I conduct research in soil reinforcement, geosynthetics, unsaturated soil mechanics, earth retention, and bridge supports. My research involves physical and numerical modeling of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering systems, and infrastructure instrumentation, and laboratory experimentation. My research in the area of soil reinforcement includes evaluation of loading mechanisms involved in reinforced soil structures, the evaluation of stress and strain fields in reinforced soil structures, and the evaluation of the extent of soil-reinforcement interaction as well as the interaction among neighboring reinforcement layers in reinforced soil structures. My research in the area of unsaturated soils includes exploring the effect of climate change on the weather-driven deterioration of geotechnical features. My research in the area of infrastructure asset management includes risk-based assessment of infrastructure features and assessment of environmental impacts associated with geotechnical structures. As part of my teaching experience, I served as an instructor for several geotechnical engineering courses at Cairo University and the University of Texas at Austin. The courses I delivered involved topics on soil mechanics, foundations, earth retention, site investigation, and swelling soils. As part of my professional consulting experience, I conduct analyses, designs, and forensic evaluations of retaining walls, reinforced soil structures, deep excavations, bridge foundations, waste containment facilities, and tailings and embankment dams.

Profile

I obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Cairo University, and my PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

After graduation, I worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas. My research was focused on reinforced soil structures and geosynthetics applications in geotechnical engineering. I participated in research projects sponsored by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, the US Federal Highway Administration, the Geosynthetic Institute, several geosynthetic manufacturers, and Texas and Indiana Departments of Transportation. Prior to joining Loughbrough University as a Research Associate, I worked as a geotechnical engineer on a wide range of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering projects, including analyses, designs, and forensic evaluations of retaining walls, reinforced soil structures, deep excavations, bridge foundations, waste containment facilities, and tailings and embankment dams. I assisted expert witnesses in cases involving collapse and poor performance of reinforced soil structures. I provided solutions to geotechnical problems in a number of environmental remediation projects involving cleanup of superfund sites. Some of the consulting projects he participated in served the US Environmental Protection Agency, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State and Indiana Departments of Transportation, Tennessee Valley Authority, New Jersey Transit, and several other multinational private and public entities. My current research at Loughborough University is focused on the deterioration of infrastructure assets considering the impact of climate change.
