Loughborough University is recruiting students for a new MSc in Intelligent Transport Systems, which will start in October 2021. Designed in collaboration with industry, the programme will:

• address economic, social and environmental transport challenges that are increasingly important;
• consider new technologies shaping a rapidly and fundamentally changing transport sector;
• teach innovative approaches to collecting and managing large and multi-faceted datasets;
• apply advanced techniques for modelling and presenting data, for example, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualisation and simulation; and
• provide cutting edge insights into research and problem-solving methods.

Modules offered include: Fundamentals of Intelligent Transport Systems; Connected and Autonomous Vehicles; Urban Mobility and Smarter Cities; Modelling and Forecasting for the Built Environment; Simulation and Visualisation; and GIS and Data Analysis; Research Methods; and a Research Project module. 

The MSc will be taught by members of the Transport and Urban Planning Group (TUPG) in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at the Loughborough campus in the East Midlands.

The MSc has been introduced as a response to a transport system that is rapidly changing due to the development of autonomous, intelligent systems that are able to learn, adapt, take decisions and act independently of humans. Meanwhile, climate change, increasing incomes, urbanisation, poor air quality, a large number of traffic fatalities and an ageing population are also shaping the context that the transport system operates in. This MSc in Intelligent Transport Systems aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to participate in this revolution.

Students will be taught to use state-of-the-art tools and methods to effectively and efficiently collect, analyse, represent and apply this new abundance of data to the transport system. This will involve gaining the ability to design, test, and implement new systems to manage the operation of transport and integrate this with the wider built environment. On completion of the degree, students will be able to utilise tools and methods in evaluating the impacts of emerging technologies on transport system performance.

Accreditation is being sought from the Chartered Institution of Logistics and Transport.
