Loughborough's Civil Engineering alumnus wins the ICE East Midlands Emerging Engineers Award

Our Civil Engineering alumnus, Kieran Dhandwar, has won the East Midlands Emerging Engineers Award 2021 organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Kieran was sponsored throughout his studies at Loughborough University by AECOM, a multinational premier infrastructure consulting firm, partnering with clients to solve the world's most complex challenges. He now works at the firm as a Graduate Engineer, and he has been praised by his colleagues for his technical abilities, innovative nature and inquisitive attitude.

The aim of the ICE Emerging Engineers award is to showcase the knowledge and talent of ICE’s graduate and student members to the wider civil engineering community. There is also an opportunity to be selected for publication of the winning paper in one of the ICE technical journals.

For this award, Kieran presented his research project completed at Loughborough University on "The impact of climate change on Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) surfacing".

He said: “With ongoing climate change, it is critical that we assess the materials we design for our roads against future conditions. We need to do this to determine how our current methods and designs are impacted and to ensure we can find sustainable methods to mitigate these impacts. My paper successfully identified the susceptibly of Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) to climate change while indicating that subtle design tweaks would not be enough to ensure the longevity of our pavements."

Kieran graduated from Loughborough with a degree in Civil Engineering in 2020.
