Research and expertise
I am a lecturer working on catchment systems modelling. My research interests cover computational hydraulics and its applications in modelling and understanding hydrological and geomorphological processes in catchments. My research vision is to develop a whole-system modelling approach to simulate and understand the rainfall-induced interactive catchment processes, and apply it to mitigate risk of flood, landslide and debris flow.
Current research activity
Research interest:
- Robust numerical methods for solving the shallow water type equations with complex source terms
- High-performance computing techniques for catchment/city scale modelling
- Real-time flood forecasting
- Heavy-rainfall induced geohazard chains
Ongoing projects:

Profile
Career
I am currently a Lecturer in Water Engineering in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University. Before joining Loughborough in May 2018, I was a Research Associate at Newcastle University. I received my BEng and MEng from Wuhan University, China in 2010 and 2012, and my PhD from Newcastle University in 2017. I am working as investigators on several projects under the NERC ‘Towards Sustainable Earth (TaSE)’, ‘UK Climate Resilience’ and the UK Met Office ‘Weather and Climate Science for Service Partnership’ programmes, with a total value of over £400K. I have published 24 papers in leading international journals and conferences and have won two “best paper” awards at international conferences. I have also been reviewing papers for leading international journals including ‘Water Resources Research’, ‘Advances in Water Resources’ and ‘Journal of Hydrology’. I have co-edited a special issue in the journal ‘Advances in Water Resources’ and organised two international meetings since 2017.
