Poetry walk commission
Calling all student poets - get paid to write and record a campus poem for a special audio poetry walk.
We’re working on a special audio poetry walk which will be available to download from w/c 10 May 2021 to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. We’re looking for students who would like to write and record a poem to be part of this walk.
Would you like to write a poem about a campus location or your experience of a particular place (and get paid for it)?
Could the daffodils, the sports fields or even your hall of residence inspire you to write a poem about them?
If so, then LU Arts is offering selected students £50 to write and record a reading of their poem.
LU Arts is looking to commission 8-10 poems to form part of a poetry walk that encourages people to explore the campus environment and take up outdoor activity to support their mental health. The poems will be available via the Overhear app which pinpoints your poem on a map and allows users to listen to it within that location. The poems and walk will be launched as part of Mental Health Awareness Week from 10 May 2021 but will continue to be available after this.
The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Nature but they don’t need to be poems about nature, they can be about your experience of a particular place, they can be about the architecture and the emotional response it has on you or it could be a person or people who occupy a particular place.
How do I get involved?
If you would like to be considered you just need to email an expression of interest to Nick Slater (LUArts@lboro.ac.uk), including at least one example of a poem you have previously written and an idea of the location on campus you would like to write a poem about.
If selected, you will be asked to write your poem for an agreed location on campus. You will then need to record yourself reading it and send us an MP3 file of the recording that we can then upload onto the app. Each selected poet will be paid £50 for their contribution.
Deadline for expressions of interest: Wednesday 18 April 2021.
Deadline for chosen poets to submit their poem as an mp3 file: Friday 7 May 2021.
Poetry walk launched on Overhear app: Monday 10 May 2021.
***Special poetry workshop***
We are running a special online workshop, led by two poets who founded Overhear on Monday 3 May at 7pm. This workshop is open to all students even if you are not selected for this particular project. The workshop will help with poetry writing skills and is a chance to ask any practical questions about recording/uploading the poem. Find out more and book your place.
- The poetry walk is for our East Midlands campus. London students may apply but the commissioned poems must be for a location on the East Midlands campus, so knowledge of this campus is essential.
- This opportunity is only open to current Loughborough University students (including UG, PGT and PGR).
