Why did you choose to study at Loughborough University?

Loughborough was well known within my field of sports and exercise science as being a world leader. So there was never any doubt that it was the university I aspired to be involved with. I felt incredibly blessed that the university was only a half hour drive from my home, as it felt like the top institute in my field of interest was right on my doorstep! The day I received my acceptance letter was probably one of the best in my life, as I knew my career was going to be taken to new heights!

How has Loughborough University inspired you and helped you to progress in your career?

It is hard to say all the ways Loughborough University has aided my ability to build my brands, namely Body Development Centre and Body Vision. From the first point, the tutors and facilities were outstanding, and were instrumental in helping me to finish with a first in my degree. This, along with the extra time and effort my dissertation supervisor put in for me, is the reason I ended up in the prestigious Behaviour Change Centre at University College London, where I am about to complete my Master’s degree.

But Loughborough provided me with so much more than this. The individuals I met through the university were inspiring, from the athletes based at the university, to the speakers the university had on hand, there were individuals where ever I turned that made me want to push to be the best in every aspect.

I think that is the best way I can possibly describe Loughborough. It is inspirational. It makes you want to excel in your chosen field, and then provides you with the opportunities and connections you need to make it. To be honest, the university did so many things for me I cannot possibly fit them all in!

Would there be one piece of advice that you would give to current or prospective students looking to study the same course that you did?

Use the connections available to you! I had a deep interest in the science of exercise and nutrition, as well as business, and the resources and individuals in Loughborough were instrumental in moving my knowledge and career forwards. No matter what your goals and aspirations, there are people ready and waiting to move you forwards! It really is just a matter of asking! Do not hold back! My incredible career trajectory would not be where it is today, if it wasn’t for the opportunities the individuals at Loughborough provided me.

Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your studies? If so, how did this impact upon your Loughborough experience?

Loughborough has many events that allow speakers from all walks of life to present to interested students. I would strongly advise anyone to go along to these! They fired up my business know how, which was instrumental to moving Body Development Centre and Body vision to where they are today, as well as opened up a whole world that is now an integral part of my career, namely behavioural psychology and it’s impact on physical activity and diet change.

Loughborough also runs a prominent TedX group, where individuals meet up and speak about some incredibly interesting and diverse topics. It was through this group that I managed to do my own TedX presentation, which has given me an incredible amount of recognition within my industry!

Finally, Loughborough provided me with some great opportunities for competitions, such as an enterprise challenge I took part in. Although I didn’t win, it did allow me to create some great connections, which have further helped me to establish Body Development Centre and Body Vision in a position of strength, where they can now grow in to local and international leaders of their industries.

Can you tell us about your career journey so far?

The inspiration, knowledge and connections I gained at Loughborough University have greatly accelerated my businesses. Even just mentioning Loughborough has opened doors for me. The list of achievements I can directly link to my time at Loughborough include:

  • Growing a very successful personal training company (Body Development Centre), whilst simultaneously starting a weight loss and behaviour change mobile app (Body Vision), which is growing quickly.

  • Writing a book (which was guided by my tutors at Loughborough) which has since received a foreword from Professor Robert West, one of the world's foremost behaviour change experts.

  • Became the weight loss and behaviour change expert for BBC Radio Leicester.

  • Featured in multiple publications, such as Health and Fitness and Your Fitness magazines.

  • Became a “Trainer of Trainers” with features in the Personal Trainer Development Centre, The Institute of Personal Trainers and Personal Trainers London.

  • Became a recognised TedX speaker.

All of these came either directly from connections and opportunities at Loughborough, or have come about simply by referencing Loughborough University as my educational institute! It really is amazing what having the name on your profile can do for you!

What does the future hold?

The future is incredibly bright for Body Development Centre and Body Vision. The former will be moving into new facilities soon, where new trainers will be brought on. From here it will establish itself as the counties premier weight loss and behaviour change centre. Additionally, a personal trainer institute is being developed, where trainers from all over the world can learn to become the best version of themselves possible.

Body Vision on the other hand is growing from strength to strength, and with a book being published at the end of this year, as well as requests for features in magazines, online publications and the radio increasing, there is no way of knowing how far the business will go! Only time will tell!
