Director: RockTape UK
Simon Bunyard studied Politics with Communication and Media at Loughborough University, graduating in 2003. Simon has ongoing connections with Loughborough students through his company, RockTape, which he explains alongside some other exciting personal news!
I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career, so I picked Loughborough based on its reputation, the atmosphere I experienced when I came up for a visit and multiple recommendations from friends who had studied there.
I think Loughborough gave a strong sense that anything is possible, when you are starting your own business you need that confidence, as lots of people will tell you that you are wasting your time and are mad!
RockTape is a kinesiology tape company that supplies medical professionals, sports retailers, pharmacies, pro sports teams and of course weekend warriors. Aside from tape we have developed a host of fitness and medical products around getting people ‘moving’ better.
Getting in touch with Loughborough was one of the first calls I made, fortunately the University agreed to take their own branded ‘Loughborough RockTape’ design, in African Violet of course! We also supply the campus pharmacy and sponsor a number of Loughborough alumni including Olympic athlete Mark Dry.
Don’t let people tell you no, and if you don’t succeed then try again! Don’t get fixated with trying to crack one thing, there are opportunities everywhere, so have an open mind.
I always knew I wanted to be my own boss, it was just a case of how this was going to manifest itself. I looked at a few projects which did not come off, but I have always been happy getting back on the horse so to speak!
I like the varied nature of what I do day to day and the challenges that presents. I also like making decisions and being able to put them in to practice immediately, without sign off from the boss and then their boss!
Yes! You will have seen plenty of our tape in Rio 2016, you will see it in the Premier League, extensively across the Rugby Premiership and in the Tour de France.
We want to make RockTape a household name, much like Hoover and Vacuum Cleaners, we want people referring to RockTape and not kinesiology tape. In order to make this happen we are actively targeting big national account opportunities like Superdrug who we have been working with for 18 months. The challenge is in building mass market appeal whilst also continuing to be the kinesiology tape of choice within professional sport.
I am also very happily engaged to Loughborough alumna, Emma Stocking (Management Science), so clearly there is something in the Loughborough air!
We wish Simon the best for his wedding and every success with the future of RockTape.
