Shan Liang

Auditor: PwC

Shan graduated in 2016 with a M.Sc in Business Analysis & Management. Following his UK studies, he returned to Beijing and joined PwC as an Auditor.

Why did you choose to study at Loughborough University?

Loughborough University as the biggest single-site campus in Europe which provides excellent facilities for every aspect of student life, with plenty of open space, gardens and sports areas, interspersed with academic buildings and student accommodation.

Meanwhile, Loughborough University has an excellent reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with business and industry and unrivaled sporting achievement.

How has Loughborough University inspired you and helped you to progress in your academic career?

One year in Loughborough is the unforgotten memory in my life. The university provided an excellent and practical course for every student. All the courses build the best practice in my future career.

The most important thing is that Loughborough University providing exceptional learning opportunities to me, such as university often hold the various kinds of academic lectures for students.

Meanwhile, my graduate courses help me to broaden my educational horizons. Furthermore, the university assigns the personal tutor for every student, and the personal tutor gave me lots of advice regarding academic and life in Loughborough.

Would there be one piece of advice that you would give to prospective students looking to study the same course that you are doing?

My major is Business Analysis and Management which focus on forecasting, optimization, simulation and decision analysis to a particular area of business. Those courses will help students to increase their competitive advantages. Thus, I strongly suggest that new students should learn those courses and try to link the knowledge in books to the real business world.

Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your studies? If so, how did this impact upon your Loughborough experience and your career?

Loughborough has been named the best sporting university in the world, and it also provides the best sports facilities for all students. During my academic career in Loughborough, I was interested in running and fitness. Furthermore, I was the leader of the Loughborough Running club.

Can you tell us about your career journey so far?

After graduating from Loughborough University, I joined in PwC Beijing branch as an auditor and responsible for the auditing of Financial sector, especially in PE and VC. Meanwhile, I am the career mentor in Unicareer Education Company, give some advice and direction to graduate who is looking for a job.

My advices for current students planning to pursue their career in the Big Four as the followings:

  1. Focus on relevant recruitment information of Big Four on Website and LinkedIn
  2. Activity participate in career events and career fair hold by Loughborough University
  3. Prepare your CV and Cover letter in advance and let career center teacher review your CV and Cover letter
  4. Make the online job application in advance and  practice the online test questions to ensure you can pass the company online test
  5. Keep reading the economic and business news in routine life to improve your business sense
  6. Prepare relevant accounting and finance certificate exams in advance, which is the most important qualifications for working in the Big Four

Most important of all is that keep confidence and never give up your goal.
