Senior Design Manager: Kier Construction
Alumnus Ricky graduated with a degree in Architectural Engineering and Design Management in 2008. He has developed a career as a designer in the construction industry. Here he tells us more about working for Kier.
Loughborough’s Reputation, Quality of Education, Interest in the Industry.
Loughborough showed me how a successful career within the construction industry can be pursued and I would advise prospective students to keep your mind open as the opportunities available in the industry are vast.
I started at Kier in 2008 as an Assistant Design Manager in the Health Care Sector working on both preconstruction and construction projects.
Following my first two projects at Goodmayes Mental Health Unit and Whipps Cross A&E, I was transferred to the commercial sector and support the bid team with a series of tenders, which is when I was promoted to Design Manager.
I was troubleshooted to a complex PFI scheme for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) which consisted of 9no Fire Stations positioned within central and greater London. After 3 years on the project, I was moved back to the Health Care Sector where I was promoted once again to Senior Design Manager.
Since receiving the promotion, I have led a series of bids, preconstruction activities and construction works with a team of 7 Design Managers who support and report to me.
The role is immensely demanding but Kier have supported me on my journey, offering training and 1:1 coaching from established professionals within the business and industry.
There is a balanced blend of younger and established employees within the organisation, with friendly faces, all there to provide support and guidance when needed which is why I have worked for Kier for such a long time.
The love the change in working environment and pace. I plan to maintain a career with Kier. In terms of position, the opportunities are endless (which include Preconstruction Manager, Site Manager, Contract Manager) but ideally Director level within the next 10 years.
Firstly, receiving Senior Management status and secondly, seeing my Assistant Design Manager’s developing their careers with my support.
