Ian Hallam: Senior Recruitment Consultant
Ian graduated from Loughborough with a degree in Information Management and Business Studies in 2012. He is now a Senior Recruitment Consultant and credits Loughborough for his competitive nature.
As I’m sure was the case with most people, I didn’t necessarily have a defined career plan when I was 18, so wanted to choose a course that would open up multiple career opportunities for when I graduated. I had a passion for business and I felt that IMBS would give me a broad perspective across all key business functions (Finance, HR, Marketing, Technology)
I think the culture at Loughborough has had the biggest impact on my career. You need to be competitive and driven to succeed in recruitment and the sporting culture, general healthy competition and rivalry between halls at Loughborough gives you confidence in a work capacity. Doing a business-related course has also helped; I meet Managing Directors and Finance Directors regularly as part of my job so need to be business savvy.
Would there be one piece of advice that you would give to current or prospective students looking to study the same course that you did?
I’d highly recommend it. There are so many avenues you can go down when you graduate. It’s a good balance of business and technology.
Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your studies? If so, how did this impact upon your Loughborough experience?
Halls football and cricket. I wasn’t good enough for the university teams! The inter-halls sports are really good at Loughborough, it’s still really competitive.
Can you tell us more about your current organisation? Can you tell us about your career journey so far?
I currently work for Distinct Recruitment as a Senior Recruitment Consultant for Accountancy & Finance. We were founded in 2016 and focus on recruiting Finance, Marketing, HR, Web Tech, Supply Chain and Office Support roles across the East Midlands. We recruit staff in to the likes of Boots, Experian, Holland & Barrett, Next, Specsavers as well as growing SMEs. Prior to that I spent 4 years working for Macildowie before moving across to Distinct in January 2017.
The challenge of recruitment. It’s a tough industry to work in and it’s competitive but rewarding. It’s great to meet lots of different businesses from small start-up companies right the way through to huge global brands as well as helping Part Qualified and Qualified Accountants to find jobs to enhance their careers.
Distinct started with 4 people two years ago and has grown to over 20 staff within two years and we’ve moved in to brand new offices in Nottingham City Centre. Our Directors are really ambitious so they’ll look to continue the growth.
Hitting all three holiday incentives in one year. I went on separate trips to Las Vegas, New York and did a tour of the east coast of America.
