Director: Farrow Walsh Consulting
Alumnus Chris graduated from Loughborough with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1996. Today, Chris is the Director of Farrow Walsh Consulting, a design-led, structural and civil engineering design agency based in Leicester. Having co-founded the business in 2009, Chris now leads a 30-strong team working on public and private sector projects across the UK.
As well as providing an introduction to the civil engineering world, Loughborough University provided me with an attitude to continue success gained in the student sporting arena and take this forwards into business.
Would there be one piece of advice that you would give to current or prospective students looking to study Civil Engineering?
Enjoy your student experience! It’s so important to immerse yourself in the incredible standards of teaching and research the lecturers provide - and time goes incredibly quickly.
Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your studies? If so, how did this impact upon your Loughborough experience?
Sport was, of course, a huge part of my time at Loughborough. I played rugby union, rugby league and rowed for the university. I also played rugby union for the hall of residence, losing only twice in three years. Playing representative sports for Loughborough University, I gained excellent teamwork skills and enabled me to meet and share the experience with students at other universities too.
Since university I have worked for international engineering consultancies on exciting projects around the world, before establishing my own company working on projects across the UK.
I enjoy the diversity each day brings from problem solving, communicating with clients on their aspirations, mentoring colleagues, developing graduates and inspiring placement students and apprentices to a career in construction and property.
Some of the proudest moments include achieving professional status, celebrating with my wife the 10th year of our business with colleagues and clients along with being guest lecturer to final year architecture students at various universities across the region.
