Loughborough based company founded by alumni in 1997
ArtSpace Loughborough is a collection of Charnwood artists and exhibitors, set up in 1997 by seven Loughborough College of Art and Design alumni. The group aims to provide a support network for local artists, whilst offering them a platform to promote and exhibit their contemporary art pieces.
Founding members Mary Byrne, Judith Eason, Chris English, Erica Middleton, Jackie Palmer, Nita Rao and Jemma Rix have been successfully running ArtSpace for 21 years and during this time have welcomed over 70 members. Today, the Loughborough based group stands at 23 artists, 13 of which are Loughborough alumni.
ArtSpace members meet once a month to discuss and share their latest designs, and to organise exhibitions and events. Collectively, the group exhibit several times per annum in the local and surrounding area and individually travel around the country to showcase their talent.
Their work has been known to take them even further afield and in 2005, the group took part in a cultural exchange trip to Venice. Chairwoman Mary and her team were lucky enough to exhibit alongside the Biennale; a famous arts organisation based in Venice.
The Arts Council and other funding bodies supported this excursion and their Italian inspired art was later displayed at the Generator Gallery on Fredrick Street, Loughborough.
ArtSpace have been very proactive in 2018 and thus far, have exhibited ‘Seeing the Light’ during January and February at Deda Dance and Performance Centre in Derby. Their latest exhibition, ‘Layers and Edges’ is currently being held in the Charnwood Museum in Loughborough until 19 June.
Aside from visual art, members of ArtSpace Loughborough have recently created a piece for the Outwoods Sculpture Exhibition; an event which celebrates art and nature. Open to the public 28 April – 1 May, ArtSpace also ran free workshops to engage budding artists.
The phenomenal success of this event, which saw 2,000 people in attendance, led to a televised feature on BBC East Midlands Today in a segment that was aired on Monday 30 April.
There is an assortment of talent within the group from painters and printmakers to sculptors and digital artists, to those who specialise in mixed media, textiles and ceramics. Several members enjoy sharing their skills and teach art to adults locally.
The Arts Council, Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council to name a few, have all recognised and awarded the achievements of ArtSpace over the last 21 years.
The team are already looking ahead to 2019 where throughout January and February, they plan to exhibit ‘Inside/Outside/ at the Sock Gallery in Loughborough Town Hall.
We hope that our talented alumni continue to flourish in the friendly and supportive environment that ArtSpace Loughborough provides, and wish all members well in future exhibitions.
