Scholar and donor relationship concludes with special celebration

We recently celebrated awarding our largest-ever number of Opportunity Scholarships for this academic year. The scholarships have a huge impact on the student recipients – but can also have a great impact on the donor. Alumnus Murray Chapman recently saw his first-ever scholar graduate, and it was a proud day for them both.

Murray’s scholar Ryan graduated on 19 July 2022. He even wore Murray’s gown from the 1970s to his ceremony!

Murray attended the ceremony, and it was a wonderful moment to see the relationship between scholar and donor come full-circle. Reflecting on seeing the first of his many scholars graduate, Murray said:

“At the time I started donating to the Scholarship programme five years ago I had not appreciated the impact it would have, not only on the scholars but also on me.

“Ryan - my first scholar - greatly inspired me through the impact my scholarship had on him. This was so much so that it created a great desire in me to help and support other potential scholars.

“I am immensely proud of Ryan, and it has been immeasurably rewarding to follow his journey whilst being at Loughborough.

“I graduated from the School of Civil and Building Engineering as it was then known in 1971. It is an emotional moment seeing him graduate with his MEng degree from the same School. For me, there is nothing more fulfilling and enriching.”

Congratulations to Ryan on his graduation.
