Alumnus Dick Masters has been playing his part by seeking to innovate throughout his career.
Dick studied Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough and graduated in June 1980. He joined the Royal Navy as a pilot in Jan 1982. He spent time as Executive Officer of NATO’s communications agency before leaving the navy in 2009 and completing a Cert Ed. He is now the programme Leader for Aerospace and Sustainability at the Technology Centre, Exeter College, UK.
During his time as Head of the Marine and Air Engineering faculty at HMS SULTAN, Gosport, Hants he had the vision to fit-out all 26 classrooms and laboratories in his faculty with new networked interactive whiteboard technology. This was the first such individual initiative in Europe and Dick successfully found funding, implemented, and evaluated the project.
Driving the sustainability agenda
As the only EAUC Sustainability Champion in FE, Dick led Exeter College’s engagement with the NUS/SoS Global SDG Teach-in earlier this year. The college came top of the UK tables in the FE sector for the number of staff and students who engaged with the learning materials.
At the same time, a scheme for staff and students who engaged in this event was introduced and they were recognised as ‘Green Ambassadors’ for their faculty. The college has also created a database of community contacts offering projects to students which align with the UN Sustainability Development Goals which they might consider embedding in their learning.
