Loughborough Design Society welcome alumni to campus
Three alumni visited campus on 19 February 2020 to meet with around 40 students who are members of the Design Society.
Alumni Martin Gossling, Shailen Mistry and Alan Vaughan Thomas came together to discuss their careers and the design industry.
Martin, CEO of 270 Vision, talked about his company and journey since Loughborough. The alumnus, who graduated with a degree in Creative Design in 1984, brought along a collection of his designs as well as a BAFTA Technology Award, which was awarded to a team he was involved with for a mini mixer.
He discussed experiences working with companies such as HTC and Motorola and being involved with initial concepts for the first smart phone.
Joining Martin was alumnus Shailen, who is a UX Designer for The Lego Group. Shailen graduated in 2016 with a degree in Product Design and Technology. Talking about experiences on placement and as a graduate, Shailen encouraged students to present strong portfolios. He also said: “Make time for yourself, and always re-energise. When you leave University, put your thoughts of imposter syndrome out of the way”. He also talked about playing to strengths and pursuing what you love doing.
Alumni Advisory Board member Alan Vaughan Thomas also joined the session. Alan, who has a degree in Automotive Engineering, talked about his experiences in design from a different angle. Alan works primarily in vehicle safety and presented on automotive design. He discussed working on sites following pedestrian accidents, as well as working on designs with Renault and Jaguar Land Rover. Alan is the Founder of CAVT, based on the Loughborough University campus, specialising in automotive consultancy.
