Four alumni contribute to Geography careers panel
On Tuesday 18 February, Emma Bates, Daniel Coles, Caroline Gower and Dr Katie Loakes came together on the Loughborough campus to discuss careers in Geography.
Emma, a current Doctoral Researcher at Loughborough University graduated in 2018 with her BSc and pursued her passion to study for a PhD on “Gender and ethnicity in young women’s career decisions and experiences”. In considering her options after her undergraduate degree, Emma said: “pay attention to the modules that you are interested in and this will help you to investigate possible job opportunities”.
Joining Emma was alumnus Daniel who is a Flood Risk Engineer at Leicester City Council. Representing the public sector, Daniel offered a different perspective on careers into geography and discussed the variety that his role brings. The alumnus was able to pursue his interest in emergency response, flood risk and mapping, and told students that “geographers have lots of transferable skills – you don’t have to have a geographical career after university”.
Alumna Caroline, who studied alongside Daniel, is a Graduate Engineer for Mayer Brown. She shared her journey since graduating with a BSc in Geography in 2017 and talked about the value of her placement in securing a graduate role at the organisation. She also encouraged students to chase employers on applications and to request feedback after interview.
Finally, alumna Katie joined the panel from Severn Trent, where she works as a Hydraulic Modeller. Katie has a BSc, MSc and PhD in Geography, gaining her Doctorate in 2016. Through her career so far, Katie has developed skills that she learned at university, and currently works on capital projects within industrial and housing developments, focusing on sewage planning. She has slightly diverted away from her thesis on Ethiopian lakes, and so Katie told students: “don’t turn down opportunities that you are not sure about, always persevere”.
The panellists encouraged students to consider joining a chartered institute and to always show enthusiasm for the industry.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time.
