Entrepreneurial alumni share insights into business journeys

On 8 October 2020, four alumni formed a panel for the Insights into Entrepreneurship alumni event. The event, which was held online, was attended by alumni who were interested in hearing about the journeys of fellow Loughborough graduates.

Oliver Sidwell, Alumni Association President and Co-Founder of RMP Enterprise, chaired the event and welcomed Sue Anstiss MBE, Founder and CEO of Fearless Women, Charlie Baron, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Up.co. and Hannah Saunders, Founder at Toddle. They were joined by Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise at the University, Professor Tracy Bhamra, who gave an overview of enterprise at Loughborough.

The panel discussed beginning their journey as entrepreneurs, taking products to market, exploring passions and more.

Alumna Sue, who has recently founded her second business, Fearless Women, said:

“Always follow your passion. People recognise authenticity and the income that you generate will follow.”

Charlie, who has co-founded several businesses, discussed finding a problem and creating a solution. He said: “it’s about finding a market fit for your product to then access the customers.” Charlie encouraged others to surround themselves with people who will give honest feedback and to go through testing of a product with a group of people in the early stages.

Hannah has had experience in crowdfunding and pitching her product said: “you need a motivator that is more than just money”. She discussed experiences in crowdfunding and pitching for investment, adding “you need to be comfortable with the money you are taking from an investor”.

Alumni were interested in hearing top tips for people entering their first year of business. The panel suggested working hard, building strong networks, being resilient and adaptable and hiring the right people in the early days. Sue added: “find the things that give you energy and be brave”.

Thank you to our panellists for volunteering their time. You can find out more about enterprise at Loughborough online.
