Creative alumni support careers event on campus

On Wednesday 26 February, students at the Loughborough campus had the opportunity to meet alumni and employers working in the creative industries.

Alumni from a range of backgrounds, degree disciplines and organisations supported the event by giving guest lectures and advising students on their portfolios.

Alumni Scott Dillon (BA Graphic Communication, 2012), Holly Hocking (BA Printed Textiles, 2009) and Oliver Lovley (BA Illustration, 2001) came together to provide one-to-one support and advice to students on their portfolios and CVs. The trio were joined by Nish Wickramasinghe (HND Graphic Design, 1991) and Sarah Rose (BA Graphic Communication, 2013), who later delivered a guest lecture on the design industry and working for an agency.

Nish and Sarah presented to more than 50 students. Alumnus Nish founded Curious Agency in 2012 and employed alumna Sarah as one of his first members of staff. Sarah now works as a Senior Creative Designer for Curious Agency. In their guest lecture, the pair discussed experiences as designers, handling accounts and applying for roles within the creative industries, before chatting to individuals about potential career paths.

Alumnus Dr Luke Stott (BA English 2008, MA 2010 and PhD 2016), who is a member of the Alumni Advisory Board, gave a guest lecture on social media and communications in the public sector. Appealing to a different audience, Luke presented to around 40 students from English and Media courses. He gave real-life examples of public sector communications versus private sector and company channels, showing different tones of voice and giving an insight into job opportunities in communications and public relations.

During the day, students also had the chance to hear from D&AD about their “New Blood” awards; alumna Dr Sophie Hyde (BA English 2012, MA Creative Writing 2013 and PhD English 2017) talked about developing a career in creative writing; and Patrick Grant, presenter of the Great British Sewing Bee and fashion designer, discussed the future of fashion. Alumnus David Scarborough (BA Fine Art 2013) from Modern Painters, New Decorators also ran a bespoke workshop with students on artist-led spaces.

Thank you to all our volunteers.
