Alumnus sets up community initiative to help independent businesses during pandemic
Be A Local Hero is a new community initiative set up by Chris O’Connor, aimed at supporting independent businesses during these extraordinary times. Their mission is to help businesses survive the lockdown and thrive in our communities for years to come.
The free platform allows independent businesses to easily sell vouchers to their local community, to help with cash flow during the lockdown. These vouchers can then be redeemed by the customers when the businesses reopen – to ensure that they can reopen.
“After being furloughed a couple of weeks ago, I went out for a run around Surbiton, my local community, and saw my favourite barbers with a closed sign in the window and its blinds drawn. I wished that there was a way that I could support them, and other local independent businesses, during this lockdown.”
The site doesn’t take any commission on the voucher sales, and the money is transferred directly from the customer to the business via Stripe.
Be A Local Hero only launched their website a week ago but are overjoyed with the response so far. Although they are based in Surbiton, they aim to support independent businesses throughout the UK.
Chris graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2018.
