Alumnus gives back to hospital who supported his wife

Keith Spence, who spent many years of his life in Loughborough, has recently been volunteering his time with the NHS in southwest England.

Keith, aged 74, has enjoyed the chance to give back following the death of his wife Mary in 2017.

Grateful to the staff at Dorset County Hospital, who supported Mary and Keith during her illness, Keith has been volunteering as a part time NHS Volunteer Ward Assistant over the last few months.

Having enjoyed a varied career in postal administration and business, Keith retired in 2014, and has been able to use his varied experiences and skills during his time on the ward.

Keith was a student in Loughborough for 11 years, from 1957-1968, studying at Loughborough College School, before joining what was then Loughborough University of Technology. He said:

"I was a proud member of Royce Hall and studied Electrical Engineering as a Post Office sponsored student graduating in 1968.

"Following my time at Loughborough I enjoyed a very happy working life as a design engineer in Postal Mechanisation based in London. I was also lucky enough to travel the world advising other postal administrations of our joint plans with the US Postal Service to introduce a premium, worldwide, mail by facsimile service called Intelpost.

"Later I became Deputy Principal of the Post Office Technical Training College at Milton Keynes. Then in 1983 I formed my own company producing educational software for home computers and bespoke business software for the Police and many other organisations and companies."
