Alumna creates positive greetings cards during lockdown

Gemma McGookin began Handmade By Gemma in 2008, offering bespoke wedding stationery. When the news of lockdown broke and all weddings were cancelled due to Covid-19, Gemma’s work stopped overnight. Whilst trying to remain creative, Gemma began to make positive greetings cards for her family and friends.

The alumna said:

“I knew I needed to stay creative and do something that was just for me, so I went to the Studio and packed up my things to create a makeshift office at home. I ended up making far too many cards for family and friends, so offered them on my business Facebook page to others.

“The uptake was incredible, so I started making more. Three months later and I’m approaching the 1500 card mark and my website now includes an online shop.

“The messages people are sending each other have heart-warming to read (and write!) and I strongly believe that feeling that comes from receiving a handmade card from a loved one is second to none. It’s so much more than getting a text message or social media comment.

“I started doing this to keep myself sane and keep my creativity flowing, but it’s given me and hopefully a few thousand people so much more. The weddings will return eventually and I’m excited to see how the new side of my business can work alongside the old.”

Gemma graduated with a degree in Woven Textiles in 2007.
