Business accelerator hopes to yield more success for alumni businesses
Loughborough University is again hosting the UK leg of a global sports accelerator programme, which last year was won by an alumni’s business.
The SPIN Accelerator is a 12-week programme of workshops, mentoring and introductions, aiming to support the development and growth of upcoming sport technology companies.
25 teams take part in a selection boot camp at Loughborough University London, of which half are taken in to the full programme. Joining Loughborough in supporting the programme are sports research institutions from Italy, Sweden and Australia. The Accelerator culminates in a demonstration day in front of leading investors and sports brands, which last year included adidas, the Washington Redskins and Canal+.
The 2018 Accelerator, comprising of 12 teams of eight nationalities, was won by ARION, founded by alumnus Dr Andrew Statham. The company’s ‘smart insole’ raised over £260,000 in crowdfunding and won a European innovation award.
Speaking about the programme, Andrew said: “The SPIN Accelerator program is a fantastic and much needed initiative in the sports tech industry.
“This emerging sector is quickly gaining momentum and there are many opportunities arising in various fast-growing sports markets. We see this as a spring board from which we can establish new partnerships and secure new investment in the company.
“We owe a big thank you to the SPIN accelerator team and Loughborough University, as well as all the supporting staff and participating companies.”
