Aspiring engineers hear from successful alumni
Alumni Dan Milner and Iain Roche visited the Loughborough campus on 12 April to talk to visiting sixth form students about engineering in Formula 1 and HS2.
Dan, who works as a Lead Project Engineer for Mercedes Benz Grand Prix, inspired students with stories from on and off the race track, as well as discussing environmental and space topics.
The alumnus delivered the talk as part of the annual Engineering Experience Residential, put on for prospective Loughborough students currently studying for their A-Level examinations.
Also returning to Loughborough was Iain Roche, who is currently working as HS2’s Commercial Director, Phase 2.
Iain’s talk focussed on his work in rail, with specific discussions around the major work on the UK’s High-Speed rail network. He talked about his experiences from a commercial angle, as well as on-the-ground opportunities for engineers. Iain also told the students about how he has always seized opportunities that he has been afforded, resulting in a non-linear career path.
The sixth formers were given an insight into a range of areas of engineering during their trip to Loughborough. They were encouraged by the alumni to take on extra-curricular activities in order to gain further transferable skills for the workplace and were challenged to think creatively about careers in engineering.
As part of the residential, the students also had the opportunity to hear from academics, take part in workshops and meet other prospective engineering students whilst staying overnight in halls on the Loughborough campus.

Thank you to our alumni for volunteering their time.
