Alumnus wins prestigious entrepreneurial award
George Winfield’s company, Spyras, has won the London Mayor’s Entrepreneurial Award for Tech at a ceremony in London.
The award, which also covers the Creative Industries and Low Carbon categories, gives winners £20,000 in prize money and office space for a year, allowing the winning companies to grow.
Spyras, uses paper-based sensors, that are smaller than a 5p coin, to continuously monitor breathing and predict future abnormally high respiratory rates, one of the most sensitive and earliest indicators in patient’s developing sepsis. The condition kills over 46,000 people in the UK each year, more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined.
Currently, clinicians monitor this through manually counting the rise and fall of a patient’s chest, which can be error-prone and time-consuming. However, Spyras can continuously monitor a patient’s respiratory rate and alert doctors to hidden signs of the condition, which can cause death within hours if left untreated, at a much earlier stage.
The London Mayor’s Award welcomes applications from students from all London universities, including Loughborough University London. Three expert judges choose 30 applicants for each category, from over 500 applications, whose ideas show originality, clarity, relevance and a positive societal and environmental impact. Of that 90, just 15 make it to the final, where each entrepreneur pitches to a panel of celebrity judges.
This recent award is not the first George has received for his work, having won the White City Innovators Programme in May 2018 and a place on Cohort One of the MedTech SuperConnector worth £200,000. He was also recently accepted for the Loughborough Start-up Fund, which helps Loughborough student and alumni businesses get off the ground.
George graduated from Loughborough in 2017 with a BEng in Product Design Engineering, before graduating with an MRes in Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship from Imperial College London last year.
Congratulations to George on his recent success.
