Alumni volunteer as part of LGBT+ History Month Panel

Three alumni gave their time on 11 February to be part of a special panel event, forming part of the LGBT+ History Month activities at Loughborough.

The event was organised by the Careers Network in conjunction with the Loughborough Students’ Union LGBT+ Association.

Lisa Vine, Jamie Hooper and Gemma Lomas all shared insights at the event, discussing LGBT+ in the workplace and diversity agendas.

Lisa, a former LGBT+ Association chair at the Students’ Union now works to create an inclusive society, running her own business to support and advocate LGBT+ inclusion. She graduated from Loughborough with a degree in Sociology in 2009.

Jamie Hooper, a Senior Equality & Diversity Manager for Sport England shared his experiences of the workplace and an insight into the ways that he is working at Sport England to create inclusivity. Jamie graduated with a degree in Psychology in 2012.

Former Welfare and Diversity Executive Officer (2015/16), Gemma Lomas, now works as an Inclusion & Diversity Manager at the UK House of Lords. She was able to share her experiences of working in this environment. She graduated with a degree in Social Psychology in 2015.

Current LGBT+ Association Chair, Chris McLeod, said:

"It was wonderful to be able to welcome alumni back on campus for our event. Their perspective was so helpful, whether they were LGBT+ themselves or an ally, as they have all journeyed from being a student at Loughborough University to the working world.

“This first-hand experience, delivered so brilliantly on the panel, really will have helped our students feel that there are differences from campus life to the work environment, but that they can navigate it with confidence and integrity with the structures around them to provide support.

“We would love to welcome more alumni back next year.”

Thank you to our alumni for sharing their experiences. If you would like to get involved in a similar event in the future, please get in touch
