Alumni share top careers tips as part of annual Autumn fair
As part of the Careers Fairs, this year the Careers Network launched a new series of workshops, and many of these were supported by alumni.
On Tuesday 22 October, four alumni presented at two workshops on healthcare and HR.
Yvonne Lumley (Sociology and Economics 1978), a member of the Alumni Advisory Board and a Leadership Development Consultant, has her own consultancy: people-factors (UK). She shared insights into her career experiences, the sector and discussed top tips on working in HR. She was joined by two volunteers from the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, an organisation headed up by alumnus Peter Cheese.
Representing healthcare were alumni John Adler, (Business Administration 1985), Peter Bailey (Management Sciences 2014) and Dr Sameedha Rich-Mahadkar (PhD Civil and Building Engineering 2015), who came together to form a panel on the sector. The event was enjoyed by students who have been inspired by carer options within the NHS and beyond.
John, who is the Chairman and Chief Executive of University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust, and Sameedha, the Deputy Director of Strategy at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, worked together to present their experiences of working in the NHS. They shared operational insights as well as a broader overview of what it’s like to work across the sector – in medical and non-medical roles.
Peter, a Senior Project Manager at My Dentist, shared a different perspective from private healthcare. He discussed his Loughborough experiences and how they led to his role within the sector today.
The trio were joined by Dr Helen Meese from the University, and students had the opportunity to ask questions about opportunities in the sector and general careers advice.
Thank you to our alumni for volunteering their time.
The workshops formed part of the Autumn fairs, which are attended by hundreds of exhibitors and students each year. If you are interested in future opportunities to exhibit with your organisation, find out more online.
