Alumni launch new online retail brand for sport start-ups
Two alumni have created a new marketplace for sport start-ups to showcase their ingenuity in the wider market, allowing alumni to benefit from getting involved.
Kit Radar was founded in 2017 by Dr Bryan Roberts and Peter Smith. Both have worked as R&D specialists in the sporting goods industry, with clients including Nike, Reebok, Puma, and Lululemon.
Working at the cutting edge of sports equipment design, their work included studies of new innovations, often from start-ups, and they became acutely aware of the gulf between these brands’ ingenuity and marketing capacity. Kit Radar currently advertises 300 running and cycling start-ups, aiming to highlight niche brands within the wider market.
It has become the latest company to be listed on the Loughborough Enterprise Marketplace, which also advertises companies established by Loughborough students and graduates.
Alumni can also take advantage of Kit Radar’s Ambassador Review Programme. The scheme offers cyclists and runners free kit in return for a blog review, which in turn helps the company understand what products to stock.
Speaking about the company, co-founder Bryan said:
“Individually, start-up brands struggle to be heard against the big brands.
“Even those that get some attention during crowdfunding can be forgotten by the time their product is on sale and too many fall by the wayside because they lack the marketing budget to go with their great idea.
“Our aim is to combine these small voices into a big roar by giving athletes a single destination where they can discover the most exciting new brands.”
Bryan and Peter both graduated in 2008 with a PhD and BSc in Sports Technology respectively.

We wish Bryan and Peter all the best for the future.
