Alumni contribute to engineering taster day

Two alumni visited Loughborough on 26 June to take part in a Graduate Stories session for the Inspiring Minds: Engineering day for Year 12 students.

Joanne Haskins BEng DIS MICE IEng and Christopher Marchant BSc CEng MIET shared their engineering journeys through education and work with the attendees, covering topics such as chartership and professional bodies through to renewable energies, power plants and water.

Alumna Joanne, who graduated in 2007 with a BEng in Materials Engineering, showed the students the value of an engineering degree worldwide. Discussing her recent work in New Zealand, Joanne pointed out the versatility of the subject: “People will always hire engineers, they like the way we’re trained."

Joanne has worked in water engineering, railways and as a Project Manager, and has also dedicated time to be an ambassador for the industry, winning the STEM Ambassador of the Year Award 2016. She was keen to share her passion for the industry with the attendees, and encouraged them to volunteer, get involved with sports and societies and take on summer placements to gain experience.

Alumnus Chris (pictured) shared insight into his career, which has spanned the globe. He has spent much of his working life on power plants and the job has taken him to places such as China and India. He has recently set up his own business, Powerconduct Limited, working with renewable energy.

Encouraging the sixth formers to choose an engineering path, Chris talked about the ever-changing and uncertain future of plastics, aerospace and transport, which will offer young engineers a raft of challenges and opportunities. He added: “Society will embrace your contributions over a full engineering career.”

Chris, who graduated with a degree in Engineering Science and Technology in 1988, suggested keeping options open for the first two years of a degree, and becoming more specialist in final year.

The alumni answered many education and careers questions from attendees, who enjoyed hearing from our graduates.

Thank you to Joanne and Chris for volunteering their time.
