Alumni company’s smart mouthguard wins national innovation award
Robert Paterson and Thomas Quinn’s company, ORB Innovation has won a national award for their work in designing a mouthguard which collects data to reduce injury and improve performance.
The company won the Morgan Innovation and Technology Prize last month, earning them over £30,000 in research and development funding as well as access to consultancy and legal services.
ORB’s product, the smartguard, collects half a million data points every minute whilst being worn by players in contact sports such as rugby and boxing. Using the data, it can recommend personalised training plans, help prevent stress-induced injuries and identify when the wearer has been concussed.
The idea comes after Robert was himself knocked unconscious in a rugby match and was misdiagnosed with concussion. The design aims to identify ‘unseen injures’ in sport, allowing for the correct treatment and recovery.
The company beat off competition from five other finalists, with the entrants judged on their innovation and ability to bring their idea to the market. It was previously one of 10 finalists in the national Nesta Inventor Prize last year.
Robert graduated in 2017 with an MEng in Product Design Engineering, and Thomas graduated in 2018 with an MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Congratulations to Thomas and Robert on their latest achievement.
