Alumna named Young Woman of the Year 2019

Alumna Zamira Abassova has recently been named Young Woman of the Year 2019 by Women on the Move Awards for her work with The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN).

The Women on the Move Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the inspirational leadership and exceptional contributions of migrant and refugee women to UK society. Zamira moved from Armenia to Azerbaijan as a refugee aged just four years old, and was nominated by her colleagues at TERN for the award.

Zamira graduated in 2018 with an MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management as a Chevening scholar. She arrived in the UK in 2017, after co-founding the Women's Entrepreneurial Chamber of Commerce in Georgia.

During her studies at Loughborough University London, Zamira was introduced to TERN through the Loughborough University London 'Enterprise Through the Curriculum' programme, and became a buddy to refugee Muna Osman Jama. After a short time with the organisation, Zamira went on to become a Team Manager.

TERN is a social enterprise that supports refugees in the UK to develop their own businesses. Now based in the Netherlands, Zamira works with DELITELABS - a sister enterprise to TERN.

Speaking of her studies and her time at TERN, Zamira said:

“Thanks to Loughborough University London, I realised that I wanted to use my education in entrepreneurship to contribute to a sustainable cause such as social enterprises like TERN.

"Entrepreneurship gives refugees hope and confidence that is born out of their own passion and dreams. That's what I love about my job - seeing refugees having fun whilst building their own future.”

Isobel Ford, Community Manager at TERN, said:

“Zamira has many special qualities, as a person she is fiercely curious, she’s very interested in the world around her, she’s incredibly empathetic, and she’s such a motivated and determined person.

"Once she’s invested in a project, once she’s decided she’s going to do something, she just doesn’t give up.”

Congratulations to Zamira on her award. You can find out more about Zamira's experience at Loughborough University London in her alumni profile.
