Professional Achievement Award for alumna in Ghana

Loughborough University alumna, Dr Mavis Asare, has been awarded a prestigious British Council Alumni Award in Ghana.

Alumna, Dr Mavis Asare, was awarded a British Council Alumni Award on 21 February 2018 at an awards ceremony held by the British Council in Ghana. Mavis was presented the Professional Achievement Award, which recognises alumni who have distinguished themselves through exemplary leadership in their professional field.

Mavis has worked as a Senior Lecturer at the Methodist University College Ghana and has completed extensive voluntary work, predominantly working with young people.

She works closely with schools to encourage young people to stay in education, as well as encouraging students to develop learning and expressiveness skills.

Much of her voluntary work is focused on mental health. Her “Mental Health Education initiative” has reached 60 schools and looks at how to identify mental health issues. Mavis has also collaborated with The Ghana Aids Commission to set up a "Behaviour Change in the Prevention of HIV/AIDS" programme for young people. She is a regular mentor and speaker, seeking to inspire by sharing her personal experiences and knowledge.

Alan Rutt, Country Director at the British Council in Ghana, said:

“The remarkable individuals we celebrated at the Study UK Alumni Awards in Ghana have all taken their UK education as a starting point to excel in their chosen careers and shape the world around them. This year’s awards ceremony is testimony not only to the diversity of UK alumni and their endeavours, but also to the transformative impact of a UK education.”

Dr Mavis Asare graduated with a PhD in Sport and Exercise Health Sciences from Loughborough University in 2013.

Loughborough University congratulates Dr Mavis Asare on her outstanding achievements.
