Alumnus rewarded for constructing leading video channel
Fred Mills has been awarded the Digital Excellence Award for the work of his company, The B1M.
Fred was presented with the award last month at the Digital Construction Week, a construction technology exhibition at London’s ExCel Arena. Seven awards were up for grabs, with 40 companies nominated. Fred’s award was decided by a panel of judges, and was the finale of the two-day event.
The award recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of digital construction in the UK and who is seen to have had “the most impact on the wider built environment”.
Fred founded The B1M, a video construction channel, in 2012. The channel, which has over 5 million people watch its videos each month, aims to improve knowledge and awareness of construction amongst the general public, from explaining technology to showcasing best construction practice.
The company passed 100,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel in July, becoming the first built environment channel to receive YouTube’s Silver Creator Award. It was also named as a “Creator on the Rise” in November 2017 ahead of over 505 million channels.
Commenting on his win and the recent success of The B1M, Mills said:
“I am genuinely shocked and humbled to win this award. To be recognised in this way is incredible and testament to the hard work that the entire team have invested.
“I am immensely proud of what we have achieved and of the impact that our content is having on so many people’s lives.
“We are proud to be championing this remarkable industry, changing perceptions amongst millions of people. We love construction – it’s time the whole world loved it too.”
Fred graduated in 2008 with a B.Sc. in Architectural Engineering and Design Management.
