Alumnus Rahul stars on this year’s Great British Bake Off
Dr Rahul Mandal has taken to our screens as one of this year’s Great British Bake Off contestants, which first aired on 28 August 2018.
The alumnus discovered his passion and talent for baking when he moved to the UK from Kolkata for his studies, aged 23.
Rahul was afforded many new opportunities, not least in the culinary sense. He takes inspiration from the east and west to combine a range of flavours and cuisines in his creations.
His scientific background emulates into his baking. Rahul approaches his bakes with a “forensic attitude to research” and is “fascinated by the science of baking”.
Outside of the kitchen, Rahul is an engineering researcher at the University of Sheffield's Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.
During his time at Loughborough, Rahul was a member of the Landscaping and Gardening Society, as well as a contributor to the University’s Fruit Routes project. He graduated from Loughborough with a PhD in Optical Engineering in 2015.
The series airs on Channel 4 on a weekly basis.
We wish Rahul the best of luck in the competition.
