Alumnus launches inaugural international wheelchair rugby tournament
Alumnus David Pond is Chief Executive Officer of Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR), who are hosting the first Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations tournament.
Held in Leicester Arena, the tournament brings together four of the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams for three days of intense competition.
USA, Japan and Australia will compete against current European Champions, Great Britain, with the winners decided at the final on 11 March 2018.
David graduated from Loughborough in 1978 with a degree in Physical Education and English. Following 28 years serving in the Royal Navy, David joined GBWR in 2009 tasked with creating a professional National Governing Body and growing the sport.
David has forged partnerships with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and a number of premiership rugby clubs, and has established a national youth programme and an accredited coaching programme.
David also works closely with the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport at Loughborough, led by Professor Vicky Tolfrey. The Centre is at the forefront of some exciting research in support of the GB wheelchair rugby performance programme.
The Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations tournament takes place 8-11 March 2018 at Leicester Arena. Tickets range from £5-£18 and are available to purchase online.
