Alumnus embarks on 70-plus England cricket tour
Martin Burgess can now say he is an Ashes winner, having been a part of the England Cricket 70-plus team which defeated Australia over three One Day Internationals throughout August.
In the first One Day International on 5 August, the team were defeated by the Australians in Banbury by a narrow five runs, before striking back with a hard fought 22-run victory in Horsham on 17 August. In the decider on 27 August it was again a tight affair, with England winning by five runs to lift the trophy.
Wicket-keeper Martin began playing cricket aged 11 and in his three years at Loughborough was a member of the First XI Cricket Team. He was also Fixture Secretary in his final year, and he hopes to be fit for the 2020 Ashes series in Australia.
He fondly remembers playing matches on the site of the current Students’ Union, and practicing with indoor nets in the university sports hall.
Martin graduated with a DLC in Physical Education in 1969.
Congratulations to Martin and the England team on their achievement.
