Alumnae feature in Sunday Times Sports Women of the Year Awards

Three Loughborough alumnae were part of the England Netball Team which was named as Team of the Year at the Sunday Times Sports Women of the Year Awards last week.

Ama Agbeze (Finance and Management, 2006), Jade Clarke (Sport and Exercise Science, 2006) and Jo Harten (International Relations, 2011) were part of the team which won their first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal on the Gold Coast last summer.

In a dramatic final – the first to feature a team other than Australia and New Zealand – the Red Roses beat hosts Australia, scoring in the final seconds to win 52-51.

The Sunday Times awards, in their 31st year, celebrate the inspirational achievements of women in sport, by both performers and coaches. Previous winners of the team award include the England Women’s Cricket Team and the Team GB Women’s Hockey Squad.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games also saw alumna Ella Gibbons (Sport and Exercise Science, 2013) represent Scotland, who finished fifth in Group B. Three other Loughborough Lightning internationals also featured at the Games, with Peace Proscovia (Uganda), Shamera Sterling (Jamaica) and Michelle Drayne (Northern Ireland) making appearances. Lightning’s Ella Clark was also named as a travelling reserve for England.

Congratulations to our alumnae and all of the England team on their success.
