Alumna Vicky takes triathlon world title

Alumna Vicky Holland has been crowned Triathlon World Champion for the first time, having come second in the final meet of the 2018 season on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The 2008 Human Biology graduate was part of a 14-strong group of Loughborough Triathlon Performance Centre (LTPC) athletes that travelled to the event. Having performed well in the swim and bike sections, she clawed back a five-second gap in the 10km run to overtake America’s Katie Zaferes and claim the overall title.

The win follows Vicky’s bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a mixed team relay gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She also took silver in the latter event at this year’s Commonwealth Games, also on the Gold Coast.

Vicky said, "I can’t actually believe it. I thought at one point of the run that it was done because there was quite a big gap there - I can’t believe I brought it back in.

“This season as a whole has been absolutely incredible with three wins, two seconds and now the world title. It is so much more than I thought I would get out of the year.”

Vicky was joined by fellow alumna Sophie Coldwell, who despite being an U23 finished in 27th on her senior debut.

In the other races, current students Olivia Mathias and Sophie Alden finished 13th in and 23rd respectively in the U23 women’s race. In the men’s equivalent, Barclay Izzard finished 15th, whilst incoming Loughborough University students Matt Willis and James Chantler-Mayne were 18th and 29th respectively in the junior men’s race. Iona Miller, making her GB debut, came 34th in the junior women’s race.

The paratriathletes also had a successful trip, with every LTPC paratriathlete taking home a medal. Dave Ellis (PTVI) took gold in the visually impaired race, with incoming student Hanna Moore (PTS4) – the youngest of the LTPC athletes - also taking gold. Claire Cashmore (PTS5), Fran Brown (PTS2) and Ryan Taylor (PTS3) all won silver medals, whilst George Peasgood (PTS5) took bronze.

Congratulations to all Loughborough athletes on their success!
