Alumna goes Atlantic whilst tackling homelessness
Charlotte Wilton has begun a work experience placement at Virgin Atlantic after her innovative idea to reduce homelessness won her a host of awards.
Charlotte’s device, named the ‘b’, won the Virgin Atlantic Award, which earned her the work experience placement in Virgin’s main office. Her work also finished as runner up in the New Designer of the Year Award in London in July, having graduated with a B.Sc. in Product Design and Technology in the same month.
The hand-held device uses Bluetooth and a mobile app which connects passers-by and rough sleepers through a cashless donation system. This aims to bridge the gap between the public and rough sleepers, whilst improving the safety of those on the streets with a personal alarm.
Following her award success, Charlotte’s organisation, ‘b our bridge’, has been accepted onto the NatWest Accelerator and Fintech programmes. These will offer her the chance to develop the business and technology. Charlotte has also joined Loughborough’s business incubation hub, The Studio, which aims to develop sustainable business ideas of Loughborough graduates.
As a prize for the New Designer Award, Charlotte will also spend two weeks in New York in November. During this trip, she will meet with a homeless charity in Philadelphia to share knowledge of the issue of homelessness, and ideas as to how to combat it.
One of these ideas is an advisory board, which Charlotte is currently creating. The aim is to seek advice from all sources as to how to overcome homelessness, including alumni. More information can be found online.
Congratulations to Charlotte on her recent awards.
